"...the gift had been wrapped in poplin printed with a delicate navy, orange and red chintz. With her father beside her, she placed the package on the table and carefully unfolded the tucked edges, pulling the cloth back to reveal a cluster of cork-topped apothecary phials, each filled with a variety of powders in brilliant hues. As she further pulled back the fabric two larger bottles appeared, each containing a liquid with the unmistakable colour and aroma of linseed oil.
