"...the gift had been wrapped in poplin printed with a delicate navy, orange and red chintz. With her father beside her, she placed the package on the table and carefully unfolded the tucked edges, pulling the cloth back to reveal a cluster of cork-topped apothecary phials, each filled with a variety of powders in brilliant hues. As she further pulled back the fabric two larger bottles appeared, each containing a liquid with the unmistakable colour and aroma of linseed oil. These were the colours she had needed to paint the delicate lilacs and smokey shadows of her latest composition, a painting that she had kept secret from her father, as it was his birthday soon, and she had her own special plans for a gift…"
